Canadian artist Rufus Wainwright is one of the true icons that the 21st century pop music has produced. As the son and brother of folk musicians, he has built a successful career that started in a genuinely American genre but has traversed diverse genres such as pop, indie, musical theater, classical music, and even opera.

Over his three-decade career, he has released 13 albums, including notable ones like Rufus Wainwright (1998), Poses (2001), Want Two (2004), Release The Stars (2007), Out of the Game (2012), and his latest work Unfollow the Rules, which earned him a Grammy nomination.

This multi-talented artist has also immersed himself in significant and varied projects, such as his live reinterpretation of Judy Garland's album, Judy Garland at the Carnegie Hall (1961), as well as the adaptation of several Shakespeare sonnets in his albums All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu (2010) and Take All My Loves: 9 Shakespeare Sonnets (2016).

Throughout his extensive career, Rufus has collaborated with Teddy Thompson, Neil Tennant, Robbie Williams, David Byrne, and Burt Bacharach. He has even composed operas, such as "Prima Donna" (2009) and "Hadrian" (2018), the latter of which premiered in Spain at the Teatro Real and the Peralada Festival in July 2022, with stage direction by his husband Jörn Weisbrodt, inspired by the works of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.

Rufus's work and trajectory undoubtedly bridge the gap between high culture and popular music. He will be the opening act of the seventh edition of the Universal Music Festival at the Teatro Real, with a concert on July 25, 2023.
